Down Pipe - a Perfect Dark Gray

It's Down Pipe and I love it.

We used it on one large wall in the lobby of my husband's new/old office.

The building was built in the early 1920's as our town's original post office, so we wanted to incorporate a nod to the history of the building. 

 

 You can see I rolled up some of the building's original

blue prints and tucked them into a wire basket.

You might remember when I blogged about using these original

blue prints here and here. 

 Here's a glance at the lobby 'before'.

A little bland, there, wasn't it? 

 I really like how this light, distressed piece looks against the dark wall. 

?

We framed and stacked some blue prints in the adjacent conference room.

And painted the conference room ceiling Down Pipe, too.

Made a huge difference.

Glidden's Best Gray Paint Colors

You guys are the best.

 And I know you love your gray paint colors.

I've gotten a lot of e-mail asking for a few gray color selections in paints available from home improvement stores.  

 

The good folks at Glidden were kind enough to send me a little information for you...

 

Seal Grey and Pebble Grey, both pictured above, are Glidden's top selling gray selections. (Notice that Glidden uses the spelling 'grey'.)   

Krim Danzinger, Senior Color Consultant for Glidden Paint says, "When decorating a bedroom, 'Pebble Grey' is a nice choice.  More and more the bedroom is where one wants to surround oneself with a sense of peace.  We are over stimulated by our busy days and we need a space of respite, a place to fall asleep quickly and soundly.  However, a grey selection is also a wonderful backdrop for a spark of color as well. 

'Seal Grey' is a beautiful expression of quietness in this seating area.  If rest and relaxation is on your list for the weekend, this is the area to enjoy reading your favorite book." 

 

 

Glidden's Tips for Grey

�        A grey selection is a stunning color to be used for a nursery color on an accent wall.  It�s the kind of unisex color that can be companioned with either gender.  A grey appears very calming and creates a wonderful contrast with yellows or pinks. 

�        Using a grey in your kitchen can be very welcoming.  This neutral can be a backdrop to those interesting materials that are also used in your kitchen such as granite, marble and stainless steel.

�        Grey, perfect for a �man cave� atmosphere, gives the man his personal space to enjoy.  Whether it is a collection of his antiques to a movie theatre area, this grey surrounds his environment with meaningful things.

Use any one of these on trim or cabinetry and throw in a little gold

 (like the mirror frame in the second photo, or some aged brass hardware)

Rarified Air and Eleanor Cummings

In May's House Beautiful, Houston Interior Designer Eleanor Cummings recommends Sherwin Williams Rarified Air (SW6525) as her go-to 'tranquil' color.

I did a double-take after seeing the HB images of the color; they are stunningly beautiful -  a pale, pale, gray - but the Sherwin Williams on-line color sample looks very blue. Not entirely a bad thing - just know going in that Rarified Air has major blue undertones. Eleanor says that Rarified Air is "not that sweet blue, but a sophisticated blue."

Still, I have to think that the lady who puts these rooms together has to know what she's talking about:

Actor Corbin Bernsen and his wife Amanda, who decorated their California 1940's ranch home themselves, painted their floors Gray Timber Wolf by Benjamin Moore.

 

I'm loving the collected look of their place...and maybe they're my kindred spirits?

They not only use a lotta gray but they find most of their things at thrift and antique markets.

 

Yeah. I like those folks.

Last week when I asked about Nate's top gray paint color, I got this speedy reply...

When the design bloggers attended a taping of Nate's show a while back, I asked him about his favorite gray paint colors.

If you are interested in Fieldstone, it's a very warm green/gray. I love it in my bathroom. I would recommend it if you're looking for a warm greige tone - and I might even consider it for my own kitchen cabinetry...

Designer Claudia Benvenuto's home 

I thought this room in the recent Elle Decor was great. The walls are painted Stonington Gray (HC-170) from Benjamin Moore, a terrific, light gray. As a matter of fact, the whole house is painted Stonington Gray, in lighter and darker shades.

My magazine is open to this page; I haven't been able to get past it yet.

Isn't that art over the mantel just the thing?

The whole room is, really.

Right now I'm trying to get the feel of this den into my own den and I think I've gotten the wall color just right; Sherwin Williams Repose Gray. I just took my own advice and tried it from my list of favorite grays I'd published earlier on Houzz. Call me a happy gal, 'cause this one doesn't go blue or green - a problem I've had lately. It has a little gold in it (now don't get all scared...that's a good thing). See how awesome the brass and bronze tones look with this gray? That's what I'm shooting for....

I was visiting a friend last night and fell in love with her kitchen wall color - Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore. Brooke Shields used Chelsea Gray in her living room featured in Architectural Digest. Geez. I love this color. If your room is large enough and you have good light, I'd say go for it.


And I've always loved Brooke's living room art. Such a sense of humor. I think I'd like her...

Two different versions of the the Chicago apartment of Lauren Gold, design director for Nate Berkus Associates. The first one from several years ago, and the second from the current issue of Lonny.

The wall color in the second image is Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl OC-52.

Ralph Lauren Tudric Pewter

I am absolutely nuts over this New Orleans home, rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina and stylishly refurnished with an amazingly small amount of money.   

Karina Gentinetta painted several antique pieces in her home, including the secretary above, Ralph Lauren Tudric Pewter.

The french-style headboard, above, which Karina had made then upholstered herself, is also painted Tudric Pewter.
